Faro is the capital of Algarve and has multitudinous destinations to explore while you are there. You will probably get exhausted but would still want to see every corner of the city of Faro. Faro has an airport and you can easily book flights to Faro once you decide to visit the enchanting city.
It has a prodigious wall belonging to the medieval times and has innumerable monuments that include the Sao Francisco church belonging to the 16th and 17th centuries, the Cathedral of Roman/Gothic origin, the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Assun硯 from the period of Renaissance.
There are interesting museums all over Faro such as the one called Infante Dom Henriquem the Ethnological Museum that tells you about the conventional customs and traditions followed in the city. Ramalho Ortigao and Antoniano is another museum you would enjoy visiting for sure. The churches include Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Sao Pedro da Misericordia that will truly leave you mesmerized. Even the Roman ruins of Milreu provide an excellent view to have a look at the citys historical past.
The Cathedral of Roman and Gothic origin is a place where you will find several smaller adjoining chapels that look absolutely stunning even from a distance. There is one main chapel that has some impressive retable and a throne. It also houses two canvasses of Italian origin. There are two chapels that show the unique baroque carving.
The Chapel called Santissimo Sacramento or Most Holy Sacrament has some beautiful retable and walls adorned with delicate carvings and a few paintings from the 18th century. The Chapel called the Santo Lenho or Holy Cross also has awe inspiring carvings and relics. It also accommodates the tomb of the Bishop who founded the cathedral.
There is some thoughtful, one of the most impressive, tile layout on the side chapels. They are said to have been made in the honor of Nossa Senhora da Concei硯 or Our Lady of the Conception and Sao Domingos or St. Dominic. There are some gothic structures too that are placed inside. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres or Our Lady of Pleasure is well known for its baroque art with marbles, paintings and attractive tiles.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosario or Our Lady of the Rosary, on the other hand, has a gilded and carved piece on the altar and figurative tiles belonging to the late 17th century. There are also two majestic and rare lamps showing two Negro faces. The Cathedral is something that you just cannot afford to miss.
