All the visitors reaching Palma by sea will definitely notice a graceful Gothic cathedral as the cathedral gradually emerges to the visitors line of vision. Palma is a great place to be even if you are traveling by air. Palma has an airport so you can easily catch flights to Palma to have a look at its impressive architecture.
Once in Palma, be sure to get to this Cathedral called Le Seo that is surrounded by tall and protective palm trees in the front portion of the cathedral. There are some old houses to the rear of it and several fishing boats. The whole scene is reflected beautifully in the calm waters of the ocean.
The site where Seo was constructed consisted of an Arab mosque. The Seo was made because of a vow that Jaime I made to Virgin Mary. The legend goes that on a stormy night in 1229, while Jaime I was reaching Majorca to capture it again, his complete fleet was hit by a dangerous storm. This was the time that he vowed to the Virgin Mary that if he was saved alive in spite of the storm, he would build a church which will remain his dedication to Virgin Mary.
The moment storm subsided he immediately set into action to construct the church that stands majestically today at Palma. Although the construction of the cathedral began the following year but it took more than 300 years to complete it. The church is elaborate and consists of a Royal Chapel at the back which is almost as big as the church itself. It is 25 meters in length and 16 meters in width. The altar consists of a huge wrought iron chandelier hanging over it that was installed in 1346, designed and by Antoni Gaudi.
As you further move to the rear of the church you will notice 110 grand choir stalls sculpted with walnut wood shining brilliantly in the typical Gothic style. To the left side there is a remarkable Renaissance pulpit made by J. de Salas. There is another chapel that stands on a slightly elevated platform and is called Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It is situated right behind the choir. It consists of a sepulcher having a mummified body of Jaime II. It also houses a 1948 tomb made in Gothic style. This tomb is of Federico Mares. The Treasury in the cathedrals area is also a great place to explore.
