Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Mexican Margarita

Next Wednesday, most USA citizens will celebrate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on the 5th of May, 1862. Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for "fifth of May", is celebrated all throughout the USA because the 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated the much better-equipped French army of 8,000 that had not been defeated for half a century and, since the Battle of Puebla, no American country has been invaded by an army from another continent.

Surprisingly, Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico. It's not Mexico's most important national holiday, which is Mexico's Independence Day on 16th of September. The 5th of May is a much bigger in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. The most exhilarating location in the world for this celebration is Las Vegas, so if you're tempted to mark this historic day of Mexican unity and patriotism with a festive celebration, you should look at last minute flights to Las Vegas. Even the famous American actor Efren Ramirez, of Mexican descent, thinks Las Vegas is the place to be this year. He will be master of ceremonies for Dos Caminos' Cinco de Mayo party. At noon, the festivities will kick off with mariachis, magicians, models and luchadores to entertain while guests listen to the sounds of DJ Lezlee accompanied by live musicians.

In the Strip's newest Mexican restaurant El Segundo Sol, the celebrations start on Friday 30th of April already, featuring happy hours, free tequilas, performances by DJ Marc Thyssen, fashion shows, a traditional mariachi band and free dinners. On the day, numerous other venues will also be serving margaritas and grilled enchiladas in the honour of this holiday. At both Super Mex locations, The Cazadores Girls will be putting their best leg forward "to pour shots and dole out swag" from 11 am to midnight. The Mexican restaurant Agave in Summerlin will be hosting a huge fiesta with a 4,000 square ft tent in addition to their patio seating. From 2 am onwards, the local bands Acoustic Soul and Kush and DJ Douglas Gibbs will entertain the audience here while featuring Chef Matthew Silverman will prepare his famous street tacos for 3 dollars each.

If you haven't had enough margaritas and Corona's during the daytime yet, you can continue your Cinco de Mayo celebration at night. Clubs such as Eve Nightclub on Boulevard South, Lavo Nightclub at Palazzo and McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon will all host their own Sexy Senorita contests and actress, model and singer Tila Tequila will host "Looking for Love" at LAX Nightclub at the Luxor.
