World Music Day is on 21st June this year and the event is being celebrated in various locations on Cyprus including Paphos.
Traditionally, a local radio station, Rock FM Cyprus, organises a whole evening of different styles of music in conjunction with the town authorities, to celebrate the event that sees similar concerts taking place all over the world. This year, Rock FM is joining forces with Asteras Collective Rights Management and the Paphos municipality in order to take the whole event to the next level.
Originally called Fete de la Musique after its early beginnings in France 1976, World Music Day has grown and spread to encompass Australia, India, the Middle East, much of Europe and the USA. The concerts are typically free events with local music featuring strongly. Style is not limited to just popular music. Vocal groups and choirs, solo performers, orchestral, folk, jazz, traditional and DJ's all feature on the various programmes for World Music Day which is now thought to have spread to over 350 cities worldwide.
In Paphos the event takes place on the harbour at Paphos Castle, a listed building which has been renovated to a standard that allows it to stage cultural and musical events.
Proceedings on the 21st June will start at 5pm and continue with programme of at least six different acts including the popular Greek electro band, Mikro, who will round off the concert with a set starting at midnight.
It should be a spectacular night, with the castle providing an amazing backdrop. There will also be plenty of food, drink and musical merchandise on offer.
