Kos is the third largest Greek island in the southern part of Dodecanese. Kos is bordered by beautiful sea, beaches, and mountains as well as fascinating landmarks. If you love touring, sightseeing and history, this is an ideal place to visit. You will find there is so much more to a holiday here than just lying by the sea.

Kos is famous for its early history of colonization by the Carians and a later invasion by the Dorians. They were also taken over by the Persians before the Greek civilization came. During the Hellenistic (classical Greek civilization) period, the island was ruled by the Romans, the Venetians, Genovese, Turks and the Italians before they were finally merged with Greece.

But today, Kos is one of the most visited places in Europe. There are lots of striking ruins, archaeological excavations, landmarks and ancient monuments that depict the richness of this island's history and culture. The Asklepieion is one of the most important archaeological sites in Kos. It was first a medical centre and then a healing temple where Hipporates, known as the founder of medicine, is said to have received his medical training. Castle of the Knights is also another notable landmark in the history of Kos. Other sites include the Roman Odeum, Castle of Antimahia which was a target of Turkish attacks, The Hippocrates Platane Tree - this is claimed to be oldest and biggest platane tree in Europe where according to the legend, Hippocrates taught some of his students. In fact, the current tree is only about 500 years old, but may possibly be a descendant of the original tree which allegedly stood there 2400 years ago, in Hippocrates' time. The ruins include Agios Stephanos and the Western excavations with large mosaics showing the battles between men and beasts. Admission to all of these places is absolutely free.

There are several events and festivals in Kos during the year, many of which have religious significance. But the most celebrated festival is the Hippocratic Festival which is meant to celebrate the life of the famous Hippocrates. The festival usually takes place in the summer around August and could last till early September. It is usually celebrated with traditional dancing and music by Greek artist and athletics contests.
