The Foundation Cesar Manrique is a popular tourist attraction that is a memorial for the late architect and artist and this is who it has been named after. Cesar Manrique was born in Arrecife on the 24th April 1919 and he died in Teguise on the 25th September 1992. There are a lot of tourists that enjoy taking in the sights and history whilst within the area and a lot of people make the most of the regular flights to Arrecife.
Cesar Manrique founded the Cesar Manrique Foundation during 1982 and he set it up along with a group of friends, however it was not actually officially opened until 1992 after he had been killed. Cesar Manrique was killed in a car crash close to the location of the foundation at the age of seventy-three.
This foundation has not been set up as a way to make a profit and it allows tourists and locals alike to see within the home that was once occupied by this famous architect and artist. This foundation is also operated as a gallery for art and it features both work done by Cesar Manrique and also work that he acquired during his life. Some of the work within the gallery includes sketches that have been done by Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso.
There is a small admissions charge that has to be paid in order to get into the foundation, however all of the money that is made from this goes into raising the awareness of art and also paying for the various cultural, artistic and environmental activities that are operated within this attraction. The first floor of this attraction is home to a number of rooms including an artist studio, which was designed with the intention to maintain the traditions of the island.
