Christmas on Ibiza

Ibiza is one of those holiday islands that enjoys a bit of a break from September onwards. The busy summer crowds have subsided and the vast sandy beaches are more easily admired. The tourists who take their holidays in September, having waited until the school-age children have returned home, have been able to enjoy a more peaceful time on the island. Once October arrives everything eases back to a slower pace, the international nightclubs that Ibiza is famous for have had their end of season parties and the islands is given back to the locals for a few months.
Christmas is a little different though, as the island sees tourists returning to take a short winter break. Many British people have second homes on the island, while others are more than happy to travel back there having enjoyed the island during a summer holiday. For many December is the perfect time to visit Ibiza and spend a few days away from the hustle and bustle of the British Christmas.
The festive period in Ibiza is still a time of celebration, but things do seem a little less hectic and not overly commercialised. The giving of presents, as is the Spanish tradition, does not take place until Epiphany in early January. Many of the usual Christmas traditions are still present like the festive lights in Ibiza town which were illuminated on 1st December. There is a Christmas market and the traditional Christmas tree in the pedestrian area of the Vara de Rey plus there are usually various concerts and theatre performances to enjoy. Last year The Ibiza Symphony Orchestra played a Christmas concert on 20th December at the Auditorio Municipal De Can Ventosa.
