Ciutadella Cathedral is a magnificent structure built in the 13th century. It is a place of worship located at Placa de la Catedral in Ciutadella. Ciutadella stands for western Menorcas culture and history. Ciutadella can be reached by availing the well equipped bus service that runs daily. The buses are reliable and frequent. Ciutadella is full of Baroque and Gothic structures. Its a nice place to spend a quiet afternoon. The Gothic cathedral gives a stunning view even from a distance.
It is a cathedral or a hall church that does not have transepts. The place where this Christian church stands had an ancient mosque. The extraordinary architecture of the church is truly impressive. It consists of some mythical creatures made from refined stone carvings which look unique. The church also has an extended border almost like an awning which seems to be Neo Gothic. It extends over the principal altar. The architecture is detailed and its great to watch it closely.
The church was damaged badly because of a fire that arose during the 16th century. It was then restored and renovated a little later around the 16th century. It stands on the Placa Pio XII and is known to have been constructed on the orders of King Alfonso III from Aragon, who had conquered the Island in 1287. It still has the old style minarets that actually belong to the mosque that stood here before the church was built.
The outer region of the church consists of some Gothic sculptures of gargoyles. The collection of these sculptures is large and this gives it a look of a fortress. The front portion of the church was enhanced in the neoclassical form during 1813. In spite of the severe damage caused because of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 it looks as fresh as ever even today.
