Coral Reefs at Sharm el Sheikh

Coral reef scene

The waters off the Egyptian holiday resort of Sharm el Sheikh are home to some amazing coral reefs. The authorities in the region are working hard to protect the area with various initiatives.

Situated in southern Sinai, Sharm el Sheikh is one of the most popular year round holiday resorts in the world and flights to Sharm el Sheikh operate all year round from various airports in the UK. The combination of fine weather, a wide selection of luxury hotels and the warm waters of the Red Sea all contribute to attracting visitors throughout the year. Families in particular appreciate the outdoor swimming pools and private beaches provided by many of the hotels. Divers are also attracted to the resort and many hotels operate their own diving schools. The Red Sea off the coast of Sharm el Sheik is a great place to dive, with tropical fish and coral reefs packing the crystal clear waters. There are also a number wreck dive sites in the area.

A recent initiative organised by the National Parks of Egypt in conjunction with the local Chamber of Diving and Watersports saw over 100 divers take part in an action to help clear debris from a section of the coral reef in the marine park of Ras Mohammed. Fishing has been banned in most areas here but line left behind by fishermen from the past was the main problem identified. The divers helping were given instruction on what to look for and how they should best remove anything attached to the coral. Further clean-up events are planned for the region which should help keep the fragile reefs in place for generations to appreciate in the future.
