There are several good places to visit in Palma de Mallorca such as Puerto DAlcudia, Coves De Campanet, Pollen硬 Inca and many more. One place that you cannot afford to miss is the spectacular Coves De Campanet. You can indeed visit Coves De Campanet with your family and friends. Children will love the mystery that the caves portray.
The Coves de Campanet is just short of the Campanet town towards the southern side of a hill called Sant Miquel. This falls at the eastern end of Palma de Mallorca. The caves were uncovered in 1945 while the general public viewing was begun only in 1948. The caves span more than 3000 sq. meters. The caves have manmade stair case that goes as low as of 50m from the ground. The caves have the richness of stalagmites and stalactites made from limestone. These formations are found in the caves inside of massive chambers that form part of the cave.
The rocks made from limestone in and around the Caves of Campanet are believed to be from the Mesozoic geological age and are more than 200 million years old. The rocks are said to have been formed due to the collision and folding of continental plates of Europe and Africa. This event is known to have occurred 15 million years ago.
The formation of limestone rocks and the stalagmites and stalactites is due to the underground water that is estimated to have started 5- to million years ago. The rainwater being acidic filtered through dissolving the limestone rocks and creating crystalline shapes at the same time. Carbon dioxide and the calcareous rocks also had a major role to play while this occurred. The colors appear in the caves due to the presence of several varieties of chemical elements existing in the water. The caves truly present a great sight because of these colors.
