The normally quiet town of Inca, lying 17 miles north east of Palma on the island of Mallorca, suddenly became the centre of attention during November. The Autumn fairs of Inca are traditional events that go back many years and attract huge crowds over the 4 weekends which started on 24th October.
The Dijous Bo, which translates as Good Thursday, took place on Thursday 12th November this year. It is by far the biggest event on Mallorca at this time of year and was expected to attract 200,000 people. Even the three smaller autumn fairs that took place on the preceding weekends attracted large crowds. This year the second fair on 1st November saw between 50,000 and 60,000 fill the streets of Inca.
The Dijous Bo is vibrant combination of cultural celebrations, exhibitions, markets and sporting events. More recently the event celebrations have started on the evening before, colloquially known as Good Wednesday or Dimecres Bo, when the younger people of the town party through the night. At the peak of the fair you almost wonder where all the people have come from and whether there is anyone left in the rest of Mallorca. Fortunately Inca is linked to Palma by a railway line, otherwise travelling to the fair would be difficult.
In addition to the events already mentioned there were animal displays, which stems from the origins of the fair as a cattle market. Food was also a key feature and for anyone who was looking to try out some Mallorcan delicacies this was the perfect opportunity. Almost every delicacy was available from traditional meats, fruit, fresh baked bread and traditional dishes.
