The site of a wreck just off the coast of Larnaca now ranks amongst the top ten wreck dives in the world.
In 1980 a large roll-on roll-off ferry was on its maiden voyage from a shipyard in Sweden to the Middle East. After it left Athens on route for Crete the ferry developed problems with it automated ballast tanks and started to list. It anchored in Larnaca Bay while engineers tried to sort out the problem. They thought the had resolved things but the situation continued to get worse and so to avoid the chance of a long term blockage to Larnaca harbour the crew were evacuated and the boat towed 1500m offshore. Three days later and just over a month after it first set sail the MV Zenobia sank in 40m of water.
There are over 50 recognised dive sites in Cyprus but the wreck of the Zenobia is probably the most highly rated. The boat lies on its port side and is largely intact. Experienced divers can even penetrate the wreck itself and find many artefacts. Removal of anything from the wreck is prohibited so things like cutlery and drinks bottles can still be seen.
Other favoured dive sites in Cyprus are located around Paphos and include the wreck of the Vera K which ran aground in 1972 can be reached after a half hour boat trip from Paphos.
