East Meets West at Bodrum's Music Festival

A choice destination for those interested in the rich historical heritage and natural beauty of the region, Bodrum really does have something for everyone. One of its main attractions is the hotly anticipated Music Festival, which runs every year from late July to early August. If you haven't booked yet, it's worth checking out the last minute flights to Bodrum to make sure you don't miss it.

Featuring traditional Turkish folklore, arts and delicatessen foods from around the region, this festival is a real celebration of east meets west. The festival takes place within the magnificent Castle of St Peter (also known as Bodrum Castle), which is also particular in being one of the last examples of Crusader architecture in the East.

Expect everything from whirling dervishes to jazz. It goes without saying that Turkey makes excellent kebabs, but don't forget to try the local speciality: coal roasted fish. The festival attracts thousands of spectators each year and, unlike British festivals, it can guarantee good weather!

Once you have danced the night away, why not venture into the heart of the city itself to soak up some of Bodrum's 5000 year history? Once ruled by the Persians, Ancient Greeks, Crusader Knights and the Ottoman Empire, the area is scattered with ancient relics and treasures, most of which can be viewed in the museum located in the Bodrum Castle of The Knights of St. John on the harbour. Bodrum is also home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, so there is plenty to marvel at while visiting the festival.

With so much to do in Bodrum, you could easily spend the whole holiday sightseeing. If you just want to relax, however, take a deserved rest in one of the bohemian cafes overlooking the marina. Nestled in winding cobbled streets and shaded by palm-groves, Bodrum has a friendly atmosphere that is hard to beat. It's hardly surprising that many of the 'locals' were once tourists that have never had the heart to leave this cultural hub of the Aegean Sea.
