Fast Cars in Gran Canaria

The islands are no strangers to motorsport events as the larger Rally Islas Canarias takes place earlier in the year and usually attracts large crowds. As a nation the Spanish are great fans of all motor sports. Fernando Alonso is their top Formula One driver while Jorge Lorenzo, who was born in Palma de Mallorca, is a top Moto GP rider.
The rally takes place over two days, the 5th and 6th of June, and the drivers will compete over 6 special stages. Most of these are raced over mountainous roads in the area around the village of Valsendero in the north of the island, with the first, third and sixth stages taking the drivers on a route between Fontanales to Moya. The remaining stages are raced on a route between Monte Pavon and Cueva Corcho.
Watching this kind of event is certainly exciting but safety is taken very seriously and instructions from race marshalls should be heeded. The mountains of Gran Canaria can be dry and dusty places during June so appropriate clothing is important. The rally is free for spectators although reaching the stages by public transport may prove tricky. Taking a hire car and a good map of the island would be the suggested option.
