Travel half an hour East from Faro on the Algarve and you will arrive at the old town of Tavira, a place that ranks alongside Lagos in architectural significance on this stretch of the Portuguese coast.
The buildings here date back to the late eighteenth century following an earthquake that destroyed most of the towns along the Algarve coast in 1755. Some buildings did survive however including some 16th century homes by the river and a 17th century reconstruction of an old Roman bridge. Shifts in the migratory patterns of tuna fish have also brought an end to the town's once thriving fishing industry, so a new economic reliance on tourism is finding a foothold. Development of leisure resorts including new golf courses can be found all over this region.
For holidaymakers who just want to relax and take to a beach there are a number of great choices in this area, although two of the best will require a short boat trip to get there. The Ilha de Tavira is a small island that lies off the coast of the town and has a number of superb beaches along its 11km length. Ferries to the island depart regularly from the main town and from Quatro Aguas for a shorter 5 minute crossing. Cabanas de Tavira is another area reachable by boat that has some wonderful beaches that are famous for their cleanliness and popularity.
Next month, in June, the town celebrates its traditional "Festa de Cidade", or festival of the City, when the whole town comes out to dance and enjoy themselves. The streets are decorated with paper flowers and free food, in the form of sardines, is offered to all as a throw back to the traditions of this quaint town.
