The Canary Islands are located in Spain and are known for their year round festivities. Gran Canaria as the name suggests, is one of the largest islands within the set and it lives up to the name by offering a calendar of events that makes the island worth visiting any time of the year. The vents are often kept in and around the area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria which is also the capital of the island. Many of the big festivals took place earlier in the year, but there are still many more to come. You may have missed the Music festival in January; the Opera festival in February or even the Jazz Festival in July, but they will be here again next year and there are still many of the good ones that you can still experience this year.

The festival of the Lagoon or Fiesta del Charco as the natives call it, is still to come and takes place in the middle of September. This is said to be a historic event and is celebrated with competitions that are held by the lagoon. Many of these sports are water based and even include fishing. Flights to Gran Canaria are always available so if you still want to make it for the September festivities, now is the time.

If you cannot make it for September, that is not a problem, October is still filled with many activities and fiestas to enjoy starting with the Fiesta de la Naval which takes place in early October. This event is held on the north side of the island and involves a parade with fireworks and flowers. This is a celebration in memory of the Sir Francis Drake attacks of 1595.

As with every other island in Spain, the 12th of October is a publicly celebrated holiday and includes the National Day festival. This is not a single event, but rather a series of events and parties that each island hosts themselves. These parties and events are found all over the island, so no matter which end you are, you will not miss the festivities.

October continues with the celebration of Pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady of the Light. This takes place in teh middle of October and involves the decoration of boats to honor the Virgin. This festivity is followed by the International Film festival of Las Plmas, which takes place in late October to the early parts of November and is a major event that attracts many Hollywood personnel who wants to have their latest films seen in the event.
