Film Crew in the Canaries

The islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote are no strangers to the international film industry. Tenerife hosts an international film festival, the next edition of which happens in June 2010 and the islands have also been used numerous times in films such as The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and also several episodes of Dr Who.
This summer a film crew of 350 was sent to Tenerife by Warner Brothers to capture scenes that will make up a large part of the remake of 'Clash of the Titans'. The new movie, which is set for release on 26th March 2010, will star Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes alongside Sam Worthington and previous Bond girl Gemma Arterton. It was rumoured that the film makers would recruit up to 100 locals to star as extras in the film. As well as the foothills of Mount Teide other locations were used such as Buenavista del Norte, a traditional village in the North West of Tenerife, and Guia de Isora, a rural area on the West coast and home to the largest tomato growing co-operative on the island.
Although parts of the movie will feature computer-generated scenes, the landscape of Mount Teide was picked for one of the real locations that will form part of this mythical Greek adventure. Early scenes were filmed in studios in London and on location in Wales. Other locations to be used for the film are said to include Ethiopia and Iceland.
The original Clash of the Titans was a cult movie when released in 1981 and the new remake is predicted to be the box office smash of 2010, which bodes well for Tenerife, given the boost that the Harry Potter movies brought for New Zealand. The film makers have already released a trailer showing some spectacular scenes including some of the Tenerife landscape.
