In Spanish areas, there's always something festive happening and the Canarian Islands are no exception. One of the most popular events on the Canarian island Fuerteventura is the Feria de Artesania, a festival that annually takes place in May. For three days, locals gather in Antigua to display things they have made by hand, from furniture, weaving, clothes and musical instruments to local cheese, sweets and dried fish.
Of course, the locals don't just show their musical instruments, they play them too. Canarian folk music hovers somewhere between the Old World and the New. The Latin-Spanish dance rhythms are easy on the ear, and the somewhat repetitive melodies are played on instruments such as guitars, drums, flutes and the timple, an authentic Canarian string instrument. You can always buy recordings of this style of music in the many tourist shops.
Fuerteventura is a great destination for families who are interested in the agreeable climate and beautiful landscapes of the Canarian Islands, but prefer to avoid the wild nightlife that is typical for Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Flights to Fuerteventura from the UK take about four hours, so you won't have to deal with a jet-lag. For sunbathers, the island offers both white beaches with fine sand and black beaches with volcanic shingle. Hyperactive youths can indulge in cool sports such as scuba diving and off road quad biking.
