The island of Fuerteventura in the Canaries has its own unique mix of wildlife dictated largely by its climate. The weather is rarely cold on Fuerteventura and warm dry days are the norm almost all year round. It is because of this that the island has a very limited number of animals living wild. There is however a zoo on the island at Oasis Park that is home to 200 species but hardly any are native to the island.
To see the real wildlife of Fuerteventura you need to go under the surface of the sea that surrounds the island. Several dive companies offer snorkelling or scuba trips to explore the warm waters of the coves and reefs.
Just like the geographic features on land, the underwater landscape was created by volcanic activity and offers some spectacular sights. You are very likely to see parrot fish, colourful sea anemone and you may be lucky to see a huge manta ray as they come closer to shore during the evening to feed. Lobos Island, a protected nature reserve since 1982, is 2km off Fuerteventura and a popular location for snorkelling trips.(picture A Hisgett )
