Flower Power On Ibiza

Smiling Hippie Girl

Beaches and nightclubs may grab most of the holiday headlines when Ibiza is mentioned but during January and March the island's Flower Power and Hippy era is centre stage at two of the island's festivals.

In the village of San Jose, that is located up in the hills, has plenty of charm to attract visitors in its own right. Good quality shops and restaurants, charming streets and great scenery all add up to a great package, that anyone on Ibiza for a holiday should make an effort to visit. During March however the attraction gains an added factor when the village's annual Flower Power festival takes place. The village really goes to town during this event, decorating the main square with bunting, streamers and large fluorescent flowers and vintage music from the 60's and 70's when several hippy communities flourished on the island. last year the best way to get to the festival was by bus, with free tickets provided from San Antonio and Ibiza Town. Fancy dress and authentic hairstyles (or wigs) are the order of the day if you want to merge in with the crowds. Don't plan on leaving early as the partying will continue late into the night.

The event is part of San Joe's carnival schedule which started on the 7th of March with a sports duathlon at Cala Bassa.

A similar event is held in San Antonio during January and was held on January 9th this year. This marked the start of San Antonio's carnival season and included a street procession followed by concerts from a variety of live bands.
