Fuerteventura - The Canary Islands - Part 1

Windmill in Fuerteventura

With a lush and dramatic landscape and so much to do both on sea and land, Fuerteventura possesses riches to attract both the budget and discriminating traveller all year round.

Just 50 miles from Saharan Africa, the exotic island of Fuerteventura has some of the best golden sand beaches on the Canary Islands. Its sheltered coves are dotted all over the island, and its rugged landscape is punctuated by both dormant volcanoes and pretty windmills. Average temperatures here range from 21C in winter to 29C in summer. Water temperature is about 21C. Fuerteventura is sufficiently compact to be explored in one day, and the well-paved, well-designated roads make it easy to navigate by rental car.

The miles of lovely beaches here are mostly deserted and the warm temperatures coupled with a lack of substantial rainfall make it a perfect year-round vacation spot. Because land development is keenly scrutinized , Fuerteventura is not overly built-up like some resorts in the Canaries. You get a feeling of calm, solitude and utter tranquility here. Yet conversely, there is so much for families and couples to do both on the island and in the waters that surround it that you'll never get bored.

Available water sports include windsurfing (due to the perfect conditions from the local tradewinds), surfing on the west side of the island where the waves are big, and swimming (the east coast of the island is recommended for its more gentle waves). Divers will find so many diving options, too.
