The North
The island's largest resort is Corralejo. This resort is famous for its gorgeous beaches and famous sand dunes, vast array of hotels, and varied restaurants. If you move beyond the main drag with its Brit-centric pubs and tacky souvenir shops you'll find the old town crammed with sidewalk cafes, cool restaurants, and pretty shops. The nearby sheltered, white sand beaches make this area a top choice for swimmers and the six mile stretch of coastal beach also attracts hoards of kite surfers.
Divers will be spoilt for choice here as Corralejo offers many diving sites for all diving levels to view vibrant fish, sea urchins and volcanic rocks.
There's an impressive water park in the area with a mind boggling choice of water slides, tunnels and rides for children.
If you're up to a day excursion, take a 20 minute trip over to the little island of Los Lobos. There's a ferry called El Majorero which departs twice daily from Corralejo. Los Lobos is a big draw for hikers, bird watchers, and plant lovers as there are lots of wild, indigenous cacti and birds to be found. There is also a beach with sugar white sand where you can bring a picnic basket or have a paella lunch at one of the many relaxed fish shacks while taking in the jaw-dropping panoramic bay views.
The West
El Cotillo is a low key hamlet on the west coast of the island with a fort at the harbour and many fishing boats casting their nets into the sea. This is the place to go to if you long to escape the tourist areas of the island and it's where where you can explore the lagoons on the north side of the village and swim and sunbathe on its immaculate sandy beach.
The Centre of Fuerteventura
If you take a ten minute drive south from the airport you will find the resort of Caleta de Fuste. The resort is a draw for golf lovers as there is a golf course and club that hosted the Spanish Open here in 2004. It's also a big attraction for families as Caleta de Fuste has a man made beach and with its shallow waters, it's the perfect place for kids to frolic in the gentle waves. Beyond the beach you will find an array of funky tapas bars, top fish restaurants, and trendy shops that can be reached from the shoreline in minutes. There are also diving facilities available here.
The South
Jandia is top choice for sun bathers and swimmers. The beach here is a two mile stretch of pristine sand with sun loungers and lifeguards. The beach walkway is studded with lots of little snack shops and bars for refreshment. There are also many excellent windsurfing facilties in the south due to the tradewinds in the region.
Triking Around
One of the more adventurous ways to experience the island is to take a giant trike ride. Oversize trikes can be taken out by you or can be chauffeur driven by staff at the island's well-known trike expedition company. There are several types of trike tours available and even one for the entire family. Its' a thrilling way to see the beauty and majesty of Fuerteventura and it's guaranteed that you'll never forget your ride on an oversize trike.
