Larnaca is famous for its beautiful beaches with fine sand, clear water and long stretch. These well-maintained beaches provide a good place for lounging and parasailing as well as various water sports activities such as swimming, water skiing, wind surfing and scuba diving. Finikoudes beach is still the most popular amongst tourists. This beautiful beach is one of Larnaca's blue flagged ones lined with palm trees and breathtaking views. The beach is easily accessible and closer to several cafes, bars and restaurants.
Alphas Divers Centre is one of the many attractions of Larnaca. This popular diving site, with great equipments, provides an amazing service and experience for beginners. Another adventurous scuba diving site is the Wreck of Zenobia which provides different challenges for both experienced divers and newly qualified divers.
For a non-water adventure, you can visit the Quad Bike Safari, where you will experience a fantastic time and admire a spectacular view while riding your bike around the country side and mountains. This adventure usually comes with firsthand safety instructions. Another interesting place is the Mazotos Camel Park, where you get a chance to ride on a camel's back, watch the first steps of a baby camel and feed the birds and small animals in Noah's ark.
Historic attractions and archaeological sites in Larnaca include the acropolis of ancient Kition which was once the capital of Larnaca; Choirokoitia, a well preserved village with round Neolithic houses and artefacts; Hala Sultan Tekke, an historical mosque built over the tomb of Umm Haram (Prophet Mohammed's foster mother); Ayios Lazarus, a 9th century stonework church where you will find a tomb of St. Lazarus; Larnaca castle, a 17th century building that once served as a prison but nowadays is an excellent archaeological museum; the Pierides Foundation Museum which houses a lot of interesting artefacts and many other prehistoric artwork.
Larnaca Summer festival is hosted every summer, usually on the 7th-30th of July. This huge musical festival involves a lot concerts, traditional music, dance and performing arts by local and international artists.
Cypriot cuisines include Meze, Dolmas, Kohlrabi salads and Fasoulaki. All of these can be enjoyed with a carafe of retsine, the famous Greek wine that vaguely tastes of turpentine thanks to ripening in pine barrels.
