Gran Canaria Celebrations

Maspalomas in Gran Canaria.

The carnival season is an important time of the year in Gran Canaria and because the resort of Maspalomas and the capital Las Palmas are the two biggest towns on the island, it is not surprising that the most spectacular carnivals are held there. We will cover those events in more detail as they approach, but there are also other towns on the island that host their own programmes.

Here are a few of those alternative carnival venues which can be worthy of a visit during February or March if your trip to Gran Canaria coincides with their event.

Aguimes is a small town situated slightly inland down the east side of the island, midway between Las Palmas and Maspalomas and not too far from the airport. Although the town has little to attract the tourist apart from an impressive church at its centre, carnival time brings Aguimes to life and the evening parades, accompanied by the pulsating beats of street drummers creates a special atmosphere.

Agaete, a fishing village on the north west coast of Gran Canaria, is one of only a few resorts on this side of the island. The coastline consists mainly of steep cliffs and beaches are typically formed from pebbles, with very little sand. An interesting feature of Agaete is the collection of natural swimming pools to the north of the town. These were formed by volcanic activity and fill with sea water to make safe places for swimming. Agate hosts its own festivals later during the year, but also takes part in the carnival season with a local event centered around its pretty harbour area.

Telde is another traditional Gran Canarian town, close to Aguimes in the east of the island and has plenty to interest a visitor. It is the site of some of the most important archaeological sites on Gran Canaria, including the cave dwellings of island natives. There are plenty of nice beaches to enjoy in this area of the island. Visitors during the carnival event in Telde will be able to sample the traditional tortitas de carnaval or carnival pancakes in addition to a range of other almond-based delicacies.
