Malta is known for its prehistoric temples, mainly from the megalithic age. It also has some compelling underground chambers that will leave you completely mystified and more so because their origin is not too clear. No one has been able to ascertain anything about them. These secret chambers were built at a time much before the Phoenicians arrived on the island of Malta.
The culture at that time was completely different than that of the later inhabitants. They were dedicated to acquiring skills of constructing something that would be remembered for several thousand years and sure enough it is happening. The people at that time had deep spiritual devotion. Whether the inhabitants vanished because of the natural calamities or a foreign invasion, no one knows. Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is one such tourist attraction that completely fascinates visitors.
The Hypogeum, also known as the underground cavity, is a monument which has unparalleled architecture. Excavation carried out several times on this site has revealed a whole collection of objects of archaeological importance such as large figurines, pottery, human bones, personal ornaments in form of amulets and beads and small sized carved animals.
The Hypogeum also has huge passage ways, halls and chambers that are cleaved from the living rocks spanning more than 500 sq. m. The chambers made out of these rocks can be seen in diverse sizes and shapes that truly reveal the superb quality of workmanship that these people had. The Hypogenum consists of three levels viz. The upper level that belongs from 3600 to 3300 BC, the middle level that was made around 3000 BC and the last and the lower level was created from 3150 to 2500 BC. The deepest chamber is in the lower level and measures 10.6 meters below the ground surface.
The upper level has a huge hollow passageway where there are burial chambers made on each side, cut out through the existing rocks here. The middle level also has several chambers with extremely neat surfaces that let you admire the skills of masonry, people possessed at that time.
Some of the artifacts including the famous Sleeping Lady and a clay figurine with distinct craftsmanship have been taken to the National Museum of Archaeology so that they can be preserved.
