Over 41 travellers shared their most embarrassing, endearing and hysterical experiences in response to our Kindle Competition. But the jury ultimately voted for An inconvenient trip by Meg Wagman. Meg is a 30-something blogger who abandoned her life in Dallas for the attractions of Manchester - including her husband. The winning story is about a stranger who tried every trick in the book to win her heart. It made the judges smile so broadly their cheek muscles still ache. Father Christmas in Faro
Christmas in the UK can become more of a stress than a celebration, with crowded shops, checkout queues and motorway traffic, celebrating abroad often works out as a peaceful option as well as being a Christmas to remember. Polytechneio Day in Greece
The Greeks (despite their current financial worries) love a party. They'll take any opportunity to celebrate their identity and to finish it off with a firework display that lights up the entire Mediterranean. On November 17th, it's the kids' turn to party on Polytechneio Day - a celebration and a chance to remember the students who died during the Greek resistance to German occupation in the 1940s. Polytechneio day was founded in 1973 after a tank was driven in to the gates of the Polytechneio Polytechnic during the Greek military junta of 1967-1974. So although it does have a more sombre side, the Greek people hate being too serious about anything, so the day is now celebrated throughout the country as a public holiday.

Locals about Spain: Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow the world will end
We interviewed sixteen Spanish people who live in Spain to get an insight in the true culture of this popular holiday destination. To start with, we asked them to translate their favourite Spanish saying for us. Their responses included a couple of familiar ones, such as "You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs", "there is always something good after something bad" and "the past is past". A typically Spanish proverb they mentioned was "when the toreador is bad, he complains about the bull". The one thing all proverbs had in common was that they encourage a positive attitude, even while acknowledging that life isn't always easy. A young man in his twenties summarized them all with "A beber y a tragar, que el mundo se va a acabar" - eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow the world will end."

Greeks Say 'No Way' on Ochi Day
On the 28th of October every year Greece celebrates the power of the negative. Military parades, coastal celebrations and special Greek Orthodox Services commemorate the day, in 1940, that Greek President Yanni Mextaxas declared 'Ochi!', 'No!' in Greek, and rejected Benito Mussolini's ultimatum that Greece be occupied by Axis forces or face war. Against all odds, and to their own amazement, the Greeks defeated advancing Italian troops, driving them back into Albania. Although Greece went on to be occupied by Germany, Greeks still celebrate Mextaxas' tenacity, their fierce resistance and unlikely victory with great pride.

During the winter period, flythomascook.com offers flights to Paphos in Cyprus from three UK airports, namely London Gatwick, Nottingham East Midlands and Manchester. Once we get to April, however, the schedule adds departures from a further seven airports and lots more flights. There are a number of ex-pats living in Cyprus, so flights from the UK are always popular, but Cyprus also makes a great destination for a winter or early spring break, particularly as the weather can be kind at that time of year.

Sun Not Snow

Well, for those looking forward to some winter snow, the UK was able to compete with the alpine resorts with their ample blanket of the white stuff during early January. If your preference is for warmer weather, then any of these flythomascook.com winter sun destinations would have provided a stark contrast. In the Gambia, the early January weather in Banjul was hot sunshine, day after day, and daytime highs of 34 degrees Celsius. Palma's La Seu Cathedral

When you drive into Palma de Mallorca from the east you pass by one of the city's largest but perhaps most perplexing buildings. The huge La Seu Cathedral sits almost uncomfortably on the sea front with busy roads passing close by and only a man-made lake and a narrow strip of parkland separating it from the lines of traffic. It's size also makes it look unwieldy against the surrounding architecture, almost as if it was placed there temporarily until a more fitting location could be found.

As well as many tourists from Britain, the Canary Islands are also popular with Scandinavian visitors, who probably also value the region's mild winter weather as means of escape from their naturally cold climate at home. The Danes and Germans are both calculated to have 30 days annual leave, while in the UK, workers have to make do with a meagre 24.7 days, ranking them only 13th in Europe. The marina area of the resort was built on reclaimed land during the 1980's and was developed on a principal of low level, low density housing in order to maintain the original charm of this once small fishing village. The beach area of the town, Playa de Mogan, has also seen numerous improvements including the importation of clean white sand from the Sahara and new pedestrian areas behind the beach.

Bodrum Comes Alive at Night

Holidays in Turkey are certainly increasingly popular with some remarkable beaches, luxury resorts and a spectacular coastline that changes from developed tourist destination to isolated countryside at the turn of a peninsula. At the western end of the south coast, between the Gulfs of Gulluk and Gokova, lies the city of Bodrum. Although it is surrounded by a varied choice of smaller holiday resorts, Bodrum itself is a popular location that offers an eclectic mix of ancient culture, indulgence in luxury and exciting modern trends. By day Bodrum revolves around two attractive bays, a busy marina full of luxury yachts, an ancient castle and long, palm-shaded promenades. By night in Bodrum comes alive with hundreds of bars and restaurants, outdoor socialising and some of Europe's most exciting nightclubs.

Sharm an Egyptian Fashion Enigma

There are many things that are different about the Egyptian holiday resort of Sharm el Sheikh and traditional fashion culture is one of them. Egypt is a country steeped in history, culture and customs. The native population conforms to many religious and cultural traditions as far as dress is concerned, but those rules seem to be quietly forgotten in the cosmopolitan resorts of Sharm el Sheikh on the Red Sea. However a new campaign, being promoted by travel magazine Wanderlust, aims to make tourists more aware of local expectations in terms of what to wear and hopes it will encourage people to take more care to be respectful of local traditions when it comes to choosing appropriate clothing.

Caves of Crete

Anyone holidaying on the island of Crete has the choice of many wonderful beaches on which to while away their days, but if the lure of the sea and sand starts to wane then the inland areas of Crete have much to offer. The countryside seems littered with ancient ruins, some from Minoan times and dating back over 3000 years. They may now be nothing more than a crumbling muddle of block shaped stones but when you consider when and why they were built, they become all the more remarkable. A good guide or an informative book is very useful.

Hot Work in Turkey for Drivers

Turkey provided the world of Formula 1 with a great track, warm weather and fantastic spectacle, but the teams did seem to struggle with the hot track that warmed up to over 50 degrees Celsius during the event and tested the car's tyres to the limit. The air temperature was a very nice 30 degrees and those forced to sit in uncovered stands decided to take to the shade, hence the empty spaces that appeared around the track.

Majorca aims for Safer Beaches

Having spent half a million Euros on a campaign to improve beach safety, the regional Government of Majorca is asking local coastal councils to play their part. The problem of jellyfish, which some are expecting to find their way closer to the shore this year, is receiving additional attention. The authorities are hoping to implement a type of early warning system, where anyone making sightings out at sea is being encouraged to contact the emergency authorities on the island, who will communicate with local beach management teams to provide warnings for holidaymakers.

Dalaman Marina Development to start soon

The sailing industry forms a large and important part of the travel economy on the southern coast of Turkey. The towns of Bodrum, Dalaman, Marmaris and Antalya are all dependent on the trade generated by large cruise ships, coastal cruise companies and private yacht owners. Supporting and developing this part of the travel sector has been a compromise between conservation and improving facilities. One company that has been responsible for two recent marina developments is about to start a third new project in the port of Dalaman.

Jellyfish clean up in Majorca

During the months of July and August sixteen trawlers will monitor the coastlines around Majorca and the other islands in the Balearics looking for and catching jellyfish. The creatures tend to move into warmer waters during this time of year and can be swept up onto beaches by onshore winds. By catching any shoals that are close to the shoreline the authorities predict that the threat will be reduced and therefore improve the holiday experience for visitors to the islands.

Almost one hundred years ago a railway line was built to link the capital Palma with the town of Soller in the north west of the island. Selecting a new Camera for your Holiday

Recording the highlights of a great holiday is something most people look to do but with the rush to pack everything before heading to the airport, the camera is something that tends to be left until the last minute. However once in the airport terminal with the bright lights of the duty-free lounge shining and the holiday spirit kicking in, the temptation of the electronics store is too much for some. But buying a new camera at the airport is probably not the ideal thing to do.
