Honey and Wine Festivals on Kos

Join in the celebrations at the Honey Festival in Kos

The island of Kos celebrates a series of cultural events during the summer, with many having their roots in the ancient past that defines this island. Local produce is also important to this island and several events profile the traditional products of local farmers and producers. These include the fish and wine festivals during early August in the port of Mastichari and the Ouzo Festival in Kefalos. Also during August is an evening of traditional Greek dancing in the harbour area of Kefalos and a celebration of dance and traditional music at the harbour in Kardamena.

As a precursor to the honey festival, Antimachia promotes a concert by a local choir on 18th August. The honey festival, known locally as Giorti tou Meliou (Feast of Honey) starts on 23rd August and promotes the products of the many families of beekeepers that live and work in the village. Visitors will be able to taste the different types of honey on offer as well as many sweets and deserts baked using the local honey. The festival of course includes plenty of music and dancing to accompany the food and drink. The following month Antimachia celebrates again with a wine festival. Antimachia is located in the centre of the island close to the airport.

The municipality of Pili, which is famous on the island for its horse racing festival during February, organises a series of cultural events during August which is usually very popular with tourists and at the end of the month Kefalos harbour in the south of Kos again becomes a focal point for traditional music and dancing as local fishermen celebrate on 31st August.
