The island of Menorca hosts several celebrations and festivals during the summer and, unusually, many include horses as part of the programme.
The Festival of St Joan is a celebration that is held in many towns and villages across the island during June. It is always the first main festival of the summer and is held over a three day period. Horse riding displays are often included, particularly jousting and the traditional Menorcan skill of Jaleo, when horses rear up on their hind legs.
In August, the Equine Fiesta at San Luis is a very popular event. Again the famous black Menorcan horses perform their Jaleo skills as well as taking part in races. Costume parades and street markets are held in the town, and a large firework display concludes the day's activities. Last year members the Berlin Philharmonic performed as a part of the 36th Music Festival of Mahon, keeping with the tradition of playing some of the finest classical music available.
The final event of the summer is the traditional festival of the Mare de Deu de Gracia in Mahon. Again horses are a central part of the activities, which usually starts on the 1st September and last for over a week. A large square in the town, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, is the hub of the festival and is the venue for music and dancing later in the evenings. For many, the highlight of the festival is the spectacular firework display over the harbour at Mahon on the final evening.
