Cueva de Can Marca can be a great destination if you wish to get away from all the partying and beaches in Ibiza. Located near the Portinatx resort in northern part of Ibiza, the caves are truly fascinating not only for children but for grownups as well. Your flights to Ibiza would land at the Ibiza Airport which is the only airport for the entire region of Balearic Islands. Pretty crowded during the peak seasons, the airport is about 7 km from the main town of Ibiza.
The caves present a stunning view of the coast of Puerto de San Miguel. The caves are almost 100,000 years old and equally enthralling from the inside. The suns rays seeping inside from different angles make the caves look almost magical. The water looks deep green with different shapes of red and orange lighting the insides of the caves.
Apart from the picturesque beauty, the caves are nothing short of a geographical miracle. Formed due to faults in the earth coupled with heat waves and ice ages, the caves are more fossilized. It has some very deep galleries along with stalactites dripping from its roof. The story of its discovery too is very interesting. The caves were not discovered by archeologists or even geologists but by smugglers wanting to hide their booty. The black or red marks indicating an alternate way out of the caves in case of emergency can still be seen at one of the openings of the caves.
Geological features such as water beds and cascades can be seen in their fossilized form. However, several parts of the caves were recreated by speleologists and geologists to study the formation of the caves as well as make them more attractive for visitors. The caves have been carefully excavated to make walkways for visitors to explore them till the end.
Guided tours to the caves are organized daily. These also include waterfalls with special effects added through some dramatic music and enchanting lighting, lasting for about 40 minutes. You need not be a geologist or even someone interested in geography to enjoy this amazing creation of earth. The caves are open for public view all year long. The charges for the guided tour are 8 Euros for adults and 4.50 Euros for children aged 12 years or above.
