Ibiza's Quiet Side

Ibiza City

Ibiza Town is a charming capital steeped in history. The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Archaeological Museum contains an impressive collection of Carthaginian treasures, as well as many items from the island's occupations by the Phoenicians, Romans, Turks and Catalans.

The town is easily walkable and you might want to start your stroll at the leafy Placa des Parc and head through the imposing Portal de Ses Taules gate into the Old Town. Adjacent is the Museum of Contemporary Art (free entry) which is perfect for art lovers and also a great way to escape the heat. Continue down the cobbled streets and you'll see galleries, cafes, and boutiques. At the cafe Plaza del Sol, take in the panoramic views of the harbour while sitting on the welcoming terrace with a cold drink. From there, you can head over to the Catedral de Eivissa. The Catalans initially built the church in the 14th century in a Gothic style. In the 18th century, it was rebuilt in a Baroque style. It is an impressive building made of white stone and the area surrounding the cathedral is lovely.

The beaches nearest to Ibiza Town are Talamanca which has shallow waters and buzzy cafes on the sand. A bit further down the coast is Platja d'en Bossa, known for its beach bars. A couple of miles south you'll find what many consider to be the island's trendiest beach, Salinas.

San Antonio is just a 20 minute drive from Ibiza Town, and with its wide variety of accommodation and entertainment, it makes a great base for exploring the island. Famous for it's sunsets and an amazing choice of clubs and bars, San Antonio is a top choice for clubgoers. But during May, June and September and October, San Antonio is also a favourite with families and couples. Below the splendid promenade, the local town has created a stunning, wide beach with fine, white sand drawn from the sea. Being easily accessible, this beach is popular but never overcrowded.

The waters are clean and shallow here. There are excellent water sports facilities here and other outstanding beaches in the area are also shallow, clean, and just a short ferry ride from town. Beaches in Ibiza are generally top notch wherever you go.

For those who want something quite different than Ibiza Town and and San Antonio, but already have booked flights to Ibiza, Santa Eulalia is interesting. Situated on the east coast of the island, Santa Eulalia is famous for its serenity and lack of a club scene. There is a long white beach here, a superb museum, and a wonderful cathedral. It's the perfect antidote to the wild clubbing scene in other parts of the island.
