Ifaisteia Festival in Santorini

Buildings along volcanic mountain

It was volcanic activity that created the island of Santorini and the islanders celebrate the fact with their annual Ifaisteia Festival during August. But don't worry, the volcano is dormant and it's safe to book flights to Santorini.

The local authorities in Thira are responsible for the organisation and the festival includes just about every kind of event and activity. The Megaro Gyzi Festival, to give it another name, is a three week programme of events usually held over August. Of course there will be music of all varieties and traditional dancing, but add to that exhibitions of art, sports tournaments and, for nourishment, plenty of local food and drink!

Entry into each part of the festival is free, with the festaval starting off with a wide array of musical performances, such as jazz, salsa, latin and bossa nova. The main highlight of the festival is the volcanic firework representation, followed by further musical performances.
