International Contemporary Art Museum in Arrecife

Arrecife is a very modern and metropolitan within Lanzarote and it is one place that is certainly worth visiting. Arrecife is home to a very lively port, which has a rich seafaring history and it is rapidly being regenerated. The area of Arrecife is home to about half of the people that live on the island. This areas has a vast amount of shopping, beaches and things to see and do, therefore it is popular with people that make the most of the cheap flights to Arrecife.

The International Contemporary Art Museum is one of the very popular attractions within Arrecife. Cesar Manrique designed this museum during 1975 and he actually designed a lot of the famous buildings within this area. This museum actually belongs to the culture, art and tourism center, which is part of the town council for Lanzarote. This museum is housed within a fortress that was built during the eighteenth century when it was known as San Jose Castle. Since this time the building has undergone a lot of rehabilitation and remodeling in order to make it the place that it is nowadays.

This building consists of two domed rooms, which are used to permanently house the collections within the museum. The area within the building that is known as Lasso Hall is dedicated to Pancho Lasso, who was an artist from Lanzarote. The area on the lower floor that is known as Canarian Artists Hall is used to house temporary exhibits and this is the area where all of the activity programs are carried out.

This museum has a collection, which is centered on contemporary art and this work is shown through an array of conference projects, shows and workshops. This section of the museum has work from a vast array of different artists, which includes Encuentro, Bienal and arteLanzarote.
