Since beach volleyball became part of the Olympics in 1996, its popularity has boomed. In October last year, Tenerife hosted a top level mens tournament at Siam Park.

Tenerife's Siam Park location is more famous as one of the best water theme parks in the Canaries, but during October it welcomed visitors of a different type. Visitors swaped water for sand when the Tenerife Champions Cup beach volleyball competition was held on the 9th, 10th and 11th of October 2009.

This international mens beach volleyball event came back to Siam Park's amphitheatre. Teams from various countries including Great Britain, Spain and five other nations competed for this prestigious tournament. The first two days saw a string of round-robin games where each group of teams played each other before the semi-finals and final took place on the Sunday. There was no charge for entry to the tournament, so the organisers expected big crowds throughout. There was also the Champions Girls cheerleaders leading the support and music which definately added to the excitement.

This event first took place on Tenerife two years ago,but has already become one of the top rounds on the European tour. The previous year's winners from Germany are currently ranked the number one team in the world and returned to the island to defend their title last year. Other teams that competed, other than Spain, Germany and the UK, included Italy, Holand and Estonia.

The build up to the event started several weeks before and, in addition to the volleyball and the cheerleaders, the event programme will also included breakdancers, acrobats and of course top DJs creating the music. The number one teams from Austria and Great Britain confirmed their attendance early, so the many British residents on Tenerife were able to cheer GB players Greg Weaver and Robin Miedzybrodzki.
