The Brothers Brownlee Swap Rainy Leeds For Sun Drenched Lanzarote
World triathlon Champion Alistair Brownlee and his brother Jonny, who came second to his brother in Beijing this September, have an unsurprisingly grueling training schedule in the lead up to 2012. The British brothers, who are based at cosy student digs in Leeds, stick to a regimented 35 hours of training a week, including weekends. The pair swim, run and cycle, all before midday, and then go for long runs again in the evening. The boys claim to do 95 percent of their training together and believe their consistent top 10 positions come down to tactical co-operation and teamwork.

Ironman Festival in Lanzarote

The ironman festival that takes place within Lanzarote is a very popular event and this attracts both locals and tourists. A lot of the tourists that travel to this area both to take part and also to enjoy the festival tend to make use of the regular cheap flights to Lanzarote. This festival takes place on an annual basis and it see hundreds of athletes who compete against each other within the resort of Puerto del Carmen. The festival is a one-day event, which includes cycling over one hundred and eighty kilometers, running about forty-two kilometers and swimming just under four kilometers. The main event of this festival sees athletes competing hard against each other in order to win the event. There is a range of parties, fun runs and award ceremonies that are included as part of this festival and there is something to suit all ages, therefore it is a real family event.

One of the more unusual sporting events on Lanzarote this year saw over 700 competitors setting off on the 23rd January from the African coast and racing the 100 miles or so to Lanzarote. The cash prize for the first one home was a healthy 6000 Euros, so competition was fierce with only the very fittest and fastest in with a chance of winning.

The island of Lanzarote is a great place to relax for many people, but on one long day in May there were plenty of people doing just the opposite. The Lanzarote Ironman triathlon is regarded by many as the toughest triathlon in the world. Besides having to contend with the huge distances and endurance challenges involved, athletes also have to battle against the unique conditions the island throws at them. These normally include the high temperatures and windy conditions that prevail on Lanzarote's volcanic landscape. There is very little in terms of vegetation when you get up onto the higher mountain roads on the island and the wind can feel relentlesss for a tired cyclist.
