Ribat in Monastir

Ribat is actually an Arabic term that is used to refer to a small fortification that was built during the early years of the Muslim conquest on North Africa. These small fortifications where used to house the military volunteers. These fortifications were later used to protect the commercial routes and also as centers for the Muslim communities that were isolated. Over a period of time the Ribats then got used as hostels for the travelers as they were located on the main trade routes.
