Wine producing co-operatives on Tenerife have joined forces to offer visitors a chance to learn about and sample the wine choices of the island.
Tenerife may not be as famous for its wine as the Bordeaux region of France or the Barossa Valley in Australia, but the island has several wine producing communities and numerous wineries that are open to the public. In order to make the public more aware of the wine producers and make access to them easier, the island organised a comprehensive programme for 2009 that is known as the 'The Wine Bus'.
The wineries on Tenerife are primarily situated in the north west of the island, in an area between the village of San Christobal de la Laguna and the coastline opposite Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The initiative consisted of a number of organised tours based around four main routes on which the wine tours are based. Four secondary routes were planned but ran on more restricted dates according to the season and winery availability.
There were seven wine making municipalities taking part and a typical programme would include a visit to a wine municipality visitor centre, two winery visits, concluding with a restaurant lunch with wine tasting. The tours could be taken self-guided or with transport provided and specialist staff guiding. There were also opportunities to include a visit to area of special natural interest like the Monte de Agua Garcia for example, where a trek can be taken in the hills.
Also available were full weekend tours where accommodation is arranged for 2 nights, 3 wineries are visited, with lunch each day taken at one of the wineries or a restaurant in the area. For wine lovers visiting Tenerife there are plenty of different choices to allow the wine heritage of the island to be explored and enjoyed.
