Kalkan is a town in Antalya worth visiting during your vacation. It is a beautiful town nestled along the Mediterranean coast in Antalya. The word Kalkan literally means a shield. Kalkan is more of a fishing town and has a harbor that connects Fethiye and Kas. As you enter the town of Kalkan you will immediately notice the neatly white washed homes of the residents here. Starting from the highest points on the mountains the houses have reached close to the sea. Bougainvilleas in some bright colors can be seen even from a distance. Till 1920s Kalkan was majorly occupied by the Greeks. They left in 1923 after the war between Greece and Turkey when the inhabitants of Kalkan were exchanged between the two nations. They migrated to Attica, where a new village was founded by them known by the name of Kalamaki.
People who really want a good break from their work will enjoy the calm that the serene surroundings of Kalkan bring. As the land here is still not developed it enjoys the rare calmness thats not found in any of the other areas of Antalya. Even the coastal region at Kalkan is quiet and tranquil. If you want to move ahead to the beaches then the river gorge located at Saklikent and beach in Olu Deniz are the best places to explore. Even mountain treks will lead you to several quiet places where no one can really disturb you. You can enjoy the view from that height and also admire the pine forests around as they are in abundance here.
You can also visit the ruins of ancient civilizations that are close by. The ancient remains are mainly of the Lycian cities. There are other sites around Kalkan that are of geographical and historical significance, such as Myra, Pinara, Xanthos, Patara and Thlos. They either belong to the settlements from the Lycian, Byzantine or Roman periods.
