Just like all other amazing locations in Greece, Kefalonia is no less and holds great importance in terms of many celebrations and religious festivals. Flights to Kefalonia can be planned according to the events you wish to attend, as the city offers numerous events all through the year and more so in the summer season. The festival, especially the Kefalonia Carnival, is organised with great amount of joy and excitement around the picturesque villages.
The carnival has its history rooted in ancient Greece and is deeply related with the worship of Dionysus. The Roman name for Dionysus is Bacchus. Dionysus is the son of Semele and Zeus. It is originally the Greek god of wine and fertility. The processions and costumes bear their uniqueness from the ancient ceremonies that were conducted to please and honour Dionysus along with the other gods as well as goddesses. The processions also have the tradition of carrying various models of ships. This, specifically, has its origin in Ancient Egypt.
Burnt Thursday during the carnival period is celebrated 11 days prior to the commencement of Easter lent. The word burnt is related to grilling meat. The weekend that comes after the Burnt Thursday, is known as Tsiknopempti Weekend and is essentially packed with a lot of fun, laughter and parties. As a matter of fact, this Sunday is the last day on which Christians can consume meat. On this day, you will find huge groups of people surrounding the restaurants to get their share of meat dishes. Sea food is not included in this.
Clean Monday is another significant day as it happens to be the first day of Lent. Even though the carnival atmosphere is still continuing, the so called pure food is consumed on this day. There is a tradition of eating lagana on this day. Lagana is nothing but a bread thats made using olive oil, water, yeast and flour. After the loaves have been baked, they are served along with sesame seeds and olive oil on top of them.
The dates and timelines of the carnival are determined depending on Greek Orthodox Easter. This date again is not certain and is definitely separate from the Western Easter. The most astounding part of the carnival i.e. the most rocking party is held during weekend just before the end of Mardi Gras. Kefalonia is a great place to be especially when the carnival is in full swing and the weather extremely pleasant.
There are other festivals that are celebrated with similar enthusiasm such as Feast day of the Virgin Mary, International Music Festival of Argostoli, Theatrical Festival and so on.
