Kefalonia - Part 1

Incredibly picturesque and utterly laidback, Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. With it's ruggedly beautiful topography, fine sand beaches, and gorgeous sunsets, Kefalonia is easily one of the most ravishing islands in the Med. Although it welcomes tourists warmly, it is conversely, one of the least touristy places in all of Greece.
Local laws in Kefalonia have banned advertising logos on the umbrellas flanking outdoor cafes. No visible electric wires can be seen on the streets. At night, neon lights and loud music are non existent here. Kefalonia is now, and always has been, a place that refuses to compromise its true aesthetic in order to cultivate tourism.
Kefalonia's reputation received a huge push after the publication of Louis de Berniè²¥s' novel, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, in 1994. The story is set on this magical island. But even after the release of the film based on the book, Kefalonia's popularity never went stratospheric, which has kept the region serene and unspoiled.
The island is divided between the north and south. The mountains divide the two regions and also provide a dramatic backdrop to both areas. The south contains white sand beaches and holiday resorts while the north is peppered with pebble beaches, yachts and expensive villas.
