Kites meet waves on the south eastern beaches of Fuerteventura during August when the Kitesurfing PKRA world tour comes to the island. The event last year was held between the 3rd and 7th of August, this years event dates are soon to be announced.
The competitions are held over 4 days on the vast beach area of Playa Sotavento, which is so huge that it can never look crowded. Some of the beaches on Fuerteventura are man-made, but this stretch is totally natural, albeit a bit windswept. That won't be a concern for the kitesurfers that come here. In fact, it will be highly desirable since for the PKRA Tour event goes: the windier the better.
The Costa Calma section of this beach, which lies at the southern end, does have some development and can offer a reasonable choice of refreshment outlets, but most of the more northerly sections are free from man-made developments.
Without the excitement of a kitesurfing competition, this beach would resemble a desert landscape with rolling dunes backing many sections. When the tide recedes the beach almost quadruples in size; when it is in the area reduces quickly to a narrower coastal strip and some wide shallow areas of lagoon perfect for beginners to the sport.
Watching kitesurfing is always exciting but with some of the best exponents arriving from 18 different countries the action during the tour event is bound to be spectacular. There are alaways some big prize money on offer so competition is bound to be intense, especially in the kite loop event, where as usual we will expect to see competitors executing some amazingly high jumps above the surface of the water. Spectators get to watch for free and there are bound to be plenty of dry land activities to provide a social as well as sporting angle.
