Lanzarote is located at the eastern end of the Canary Islands. There are some flights to Lanzarote and further it takes a couple of hours to reach well known areas of the Island. It accommodates a number of long sandy beaches, national parks and excursions through the volcanic ashes. This will urge you to check out the La Cueva de los Verdes that offers the largest volcanic tunnel existing in the entire world.

The tunnel also called the Atlantis Tunnel accommodates a part of the La Cueva de los Verdes. This extends to about 6 km over and 1.5 km under the sea. The cave that is formed is due to the lava that oozed out from the volcanic eruptions that took place several thousands of years ago. La Cueva de los Verdes was formed from the fluid lava that flew down the ocean. This is how the cave was formed. The cave is located towards the north of lanzarote and also towards the south eastern end of the volcano called Monte de la Corona.

It is not just the most fascinating volcanic phenomenon in the world but it is also the largest and the longest volcanic tunnels or galleries of the world.

The galleries and caves were opened for public viewing in 1964 by forming a 2 km pathway that could allow the visitors to take a look at some parts of the caves. The daily visiting hours are from 10 in the morning to 6 in the evening. Further in time, more sophisticated lights were added to enhance the theatrical effect. This is indeed a natures mystery and wonder. The slave hunters and pirates are believed to have taken shelter here during the 17th century, before selling off the slaves to Europe or Africa.

The Cueva de los Verdes was occupied by prehispanic people whose way of life and customs are explained when you notice the kind of implements that were uncovered in the cave. It takes about an hour to walk across the pathway. Today the cave has been enhanced with not just lights but also some music to suit the ambience of the caves. You might bump in to some stalactites as you walk and certain capricious shapes in the stones here. An auditorium has been created inside the cave that gives great acoustics. It has been made almost perfect for live concerts for artists playing wind instruments.
