Lanzarote Sports November

There were two International sporting events that featured on the events calendar of the island of Lanzarote during November.
First up was a round of the Surfing World Championship. Lanzarote is building a growing reputation as one of Europe's best surfing locations, with facilities now developing to complement the fine surfing conditions and year-round warm weather the island has to offer. A number of surfing schools and equipment hire businesses are now established in different beach locations around the island. The most popular surf beaches are in the north west of Lanzarote, not far from the La Santa sports resort. The La Santa Pro 6 star Men's World Qualifying Series 2009 event took place at Playa de San Juan, close to Famara between the 1st and 7th of November.
Last year Australian Nick Muscroft won the event which is the final European leg of a year-long series which moves to the USA and Hawaii for its final 3 rounds. Over 70 people signed up for the Lanzarote competition with surfers travelling from countries all over the world including Japan, Australia, France, Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Germany.
Later in the month the 2009 Lanzarote Marathon was held on Sunday 29th November. The 20th running of this marathon got under way at 10am from the Recinto Ferial in Arrecife on the East coast. Over 700 runners were expected to compete in the three different races that were held. There were full, half and quarter distance marathon races plus a children's race which were all held on the same day. The races made a great spectacle for those just watching as the route was made up of a short loop which needed to be completed a number of times depending the race distance. For the full marathon distance, runners completed four laps of the course with the leaders finishing the distance in around 2 and a half hours. Entry fees for the races varied according to distance, the full marathon costed 35 Euros.
