Larnaca - Cyprus - Part 1

With an abundance of ancient ruins, rich cultural traditions and panoramic beaches, Larnaca is an irresistable holiday destination. Holidaying in Larnaca means never having to choose between a beach vacation and a cultural experience because Larnaca is blessed with both: truly magnificent beaches and some of the ancient world's most riveting historical sites.
Larnaca is a city literally built on ruins and is one of the oldest metropolises in the world. Greeks, Turks, Egyptians, and Romans all inhabited Larnaca throughout the ages, and all left their cultural imprints behind. Cyprus (the third largest island in the Med) was also a British colony until its independence in 1960, and as a reminder of its British past, traffic still drives on the left hand side of the road.
Larnaca is located on the south east coast of Cyprus, and the city is well known for its palm tree-lined seaport which is a regular stopping point for luxury ships as they cruise the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. The giant yachts moored in the picturesque harbor rival those of the South of France.
If you're a culture vulture on holiday, then Larnaca will not disappoint. It has six museums within walking distance of its centre and the art galleries and workshops are lively and inspirational.
Nearby the marina is the city's spectacular promenade where cultural events and festivals are on offer throughout the tourist season. The oldest festival is the early summer Festival of the Floods also called by its Greek name 'Kataklysmos.' The colourful event now lasts three weeks (it originally lasted for just one week but due to its popularity has been extended) and includes rides and traditional food stalls. During this period, the entire promenade is closed to vehicles and turned into a pedestrian-only thoroughfare. Other Larnaca-based festivals include the Procession of St Lazarus and the Larnaca Summer Festival which celebrates music with Greek singing, poetry, films made by Cypriot and Greek directors, and modern as well as classical dance.
