Mad Race in Puerto de la Cruz

Tenerife_Puerto_de_la_Cruz

The resort of Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife's West coast is the venue for a more unusual tradition that is very popular these days. The annual Canarias Infinity Xtreme Race is a type of obstacle course for adults and is certainly a spectacle that anyone in the area at the time is bound to enjoy. The emphasis here is not on professional sports performance, but having as much fun as possible whilst raising money for local causes.

The challenge now attracts hundreds of competitors who tend to race in teams and more often than not get into the spirit of the day by wearing fancy dress. The activities start fairly early in the day when volunteers are recruited to help build the course, because it is the nature of the obstacles that makes this the event it is.

Examples of course elements in previous years include rope climbs up muddy slopes, foam baths, mud swamps, water sprays, tyre mountains, large containers filled with various unpleasant looking substances and concrete tunnels. Although the event is full of fun, it is no soft option as the course is between 8 and 10 kilometers in length and can take up to two hours to complete. Looking at the video from this year the competitors certainly looked fairly exhausted as they crossed the finish line.

The race took place on 13th March and started at 4pm from the harbourside in Puerto de la Cruz. Entry costed just 15 Euros and as it is best organised in advance, you should look out for next years event date if you want to join in.
