The most prominent feature of the small town of Felanitx on the island of Mallorca is certainly an imposing one. Felanitx is a thriving town in the south of the island, 12 miles north east of Palma but perched on the top of a 510m high hill on the outskirts of the town is the stunning Monastery of Sant Salvador.

Just over a mile from the centre of Felanitx a small lane leads off the main road and initially passes through groves of almond trees. But the tended fields of trees soon stop and the road starts to head upwards through the pine forest. Almost 30 switchback turns later and the view of the Monastery swings into view. Like many of the monasteries on Mallorca accomodation for guests is also available. A small hotel within the monastery offers around 20 rooms which have stunning views of course and there is also a small cafe available for visitors. But the main reason for coming up here is the view; it is nothing short of spectacular. On a clear day the monastery offers a panorama of the whole island of Mallorca. From the walls of the main building visitors can look down on the seperate towering cross that sits out on its own small peak.

Christopher Columbus, the great traveller, has some claimed connection with Felanitx and appreciated the Santuari de Sant Salvador so much apparently, he named his first discovery of land after it. DNA test are currently being conducted to try and prove the claim. Porto Colum, the nearby port is also connected to the claim. Back in 2005 an estate that bears his name was sold to a UK buyer for around 1 million euros. The 7 bedroom property had a sauna and swimming pool within grounds that also included caves which were supposedly inhabited over 5000 years ago.

In summer this year the monastery plays host to classical music concerts and on a fine evening there can be few places on Mallorca that better suit that kind of cultural event. They are sure to be something very special indeed.
