Mallorca February Fiesta

a view of valldermossa

If you were lucky enough to be enjoying a holiday on Mallorca during February, then you might have liked to investigate some of the many carnival events taking place across the island.

These annual celebrations took place between 11th February, known as Dijous Llarder (or Fat Thursday) and continued for a week until the start of lent on Ash Wednesday on the 17th of February. There are too many individual events to mention as these festivities took place all over the island, but if you headed to Palma over the weekend of the 13th and 14th of February you were bound to stumble across something going on.

Other towns that were likely to have Carnival celebrations happening were the busy town of Manacor in the east of the island, Alcudia and Pollenca in the north and perhaps Deia and Valldemossa along the western coast. Some of the towns in the centre of the island that rarely feature on the tourist trails are Inca and Felanitx. Manacor is always a good place to witness the traditional Burial of the Sardine, which traditionally takes place on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. So if you were in Manacor on the evening of 16th February in the Placa sa Torre you would have been welcomed with excited crowds, grilled sardines and glass of Mallorca's best red wine.

Many towns will hold 'Rues o Ruetes' or street parades, with various floats and hundreds of people in fancy dress. The Sa Rueta in Palma took place on Sunday 14th February, following a similar event for children the previous day. The main parade on Sunday started in the La Rambla dels Ducs de Palma in late afternoon and proceeded down the main streets of Carrer de la Riera, Placa Joan Carles I and finished by arriving in Avinguda Jaume III, one of Palma's best shopping districts.
