Maltese culture and economy has had influences almost throughout its existence. These influences have sometimes been from the Romans or Phoenicians, sometimes from the Carthaginians and at other times from the French, Normans or Spanish people. The British were the last ones to have colonized Malta as they left in 1964 when Malta gained its independence. There are several flights to Malta from many locations across the world.

Maltas initial and probably one of the strongest occupying forces had been the Knights from St. John of Jerusalem. The island was ruled by the King of Spain, and soon for 2 falcons in a year the island was given off to the Knights. The Maltese insignia is a cross that shows on St. Johns Ambulance. It is also the emblem of the Knights of Malta.

The Knights of Malta are famous across the world for their valor and fortitude. It was only because their courage and mettle shown through their physical might and inner strength that 700 of them along with the support of 8000 Maltese people were able to oust the 30,000 Turks who had attacked Malta. The Maltese and Knights have always been considered to be the saviors of Europe. Celebrating their victory in ousting the Turks several Forts, churches and palaces were constructed.

Fort St Angelo is a great fort located among the rocky promontory protruding out towards the Grand Harbor. It is in the form of strong fortification standing mightily in Malta. The Fort was still there before even the Knights from St John came in Malta in 1530. It is more like a medieval castle and its elevation was used to compensate for the elevation of the peninsula located just opposite the fort.

Fort St Angelo was where first Grandmaster of Malta stayed. The fort was renovated and several repairs were made to it the moment the first Grandmaster came to settle in it. There is a small chapel for St. Anne. This is a proof of the Phoenician influence in Malta. The fort played a very significant role in restoring the freedom of the Maltese people.

During the siege that occurred in 1565, Fort St Angelo happened to be the headquarters for the Knights. It was the place which provided the defenses to Birgu, and acted as a savior to Fort St Elmo. This is because they provided Fort St Elmo with weapons as well as supplies to survive on. the Fort of St Angelo proved to be useful during the 19th century as well when the British occupied the islands. The fort is worth a visit if you wish to explore the history of Malta in more detail.
