Sadly there is not actually much of the Mausoleion that is still standing therefore there is not really a lot to see of this spectacular ancient tomb. This Mausoleion has been named as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, however nowadays people have to rely on the remains to picture just how wonderful it was. This attraction is popular with tourists and a lot of these tourists rely on the regular flights to Bodrum.

Before the Mausoleion was damaged it stood to over fifty meters in height and it was described as being a marble tomb that was made from white marble. This tomb featured ionic columns, which formed a temple that had a stepped roof that was pyramid shaped. The roof of this building featured a carriage that was pulled by four horses and contained Artemisia and Mausolos. This artwork was relatively untouched for almost nineteen centuries until an earthquake destroyed it during 1304. The Knights Hospitaller further destroyed this structure during 1522 and the pieces were taken away to be used in the construction of the castle.

This site is surrounded by very pleasant gardens and there are excavations taking place to the right and there is an arcade to the left, which is covered. This arcade is home to a copy of the famous frieze, which was recovered from the walls of the castle. The original frieze was sent to London to be placed in the British Museum during 1846. There are some original fragments that were only recently discovered on the site and these are now on display as well.

The Mausolos name is now commonly associated with all of the stately tomb through the word Mausoleum, which is a modern word. Although there is not a lot of the original tomb left on this site it is still worth visiting.
