The Naveta des Tudons is a great tourist destination located a couple of miles from Ciutadella. Naveta des Tudons is at the right side on the road leading to Mahon. It is a construction done during the megalithic era and is believed to represent Menorcas archeological heritage. The city can be reached by air as several commercial airlines have flights to Menorca all through the year.
It is a tomb that was built almost 3,000 years ago and represents a collective monument for a funeral. Within the tomb, archeologists have discovered and uncovered the debris of human bodies along with some personal items such as ceramic bowls, bronze jewelry and few ornaments and weapons. These may have been the offerings for the dead.
The Naveta des Tudons has a tragic tale behind it. The legend has it that two giant beings were in love with a young woman and both wanted to be with her. They agreed to compete for the young woman to win her love and decide on their individual fates. They decided mutually that one of then will construct Naveta and the other giant will dig a well till water is seen and filled up in the well. The giant who is the first to complete his task will get to marry the young woman. The one digging the well encountered the water first. The other giant was enraged at this and in this state he attacked happy giant by using the last stone that he was holding before completing the Naveta. It is said that the last stone is not to be found on the building that stands today in Menorca.
The Naveta has neatly braided stones making no use of mortar and has a shape of an upturned vessel. This is where its original name Naveta comes from. The platform on which it stands has been made in form of a horse shoe that measures 13.6 m in length and 6.4 m in width. The front portion of the tomb is facing the west direction and has a small looking entrance. You may have to bend a little to enter the tomb. The area covered by the Naveta has two separate elevations and the upper one can be reached through a set of huge horizontal slabs that have been arranged very well.
The name of this tomb Naveta originally means a chamber meant for burial. Some of bodies found inside had bronze bracelets on their arms. Menorca presents a great weather to actually take a good look at the Naveta and spend some time exploring it from every corner.
