Menorca on Land and Sea

port of Ciutadella

If you are planning to spend a holiday on the island of Menorca during April then, in addition to the wonderful beaches that are just perfect for lazy days in the sun, the island has plenty of plans for other activities and attractions that will encourage you to get out and about in the countryside and on the water.

Menorca is one of those places that really reward those who make the effort to spend some time away from the immediate area of their chosen resort. The capital of Mahon, which sits in the far eastern corner of the island, became the island's new capital city after the British decided it would be a better place to base themselves and their naval fleet and moved the capital from Cuitadella at the opposite end of the island. The inlet at Cuitadella was just too small for the British ships, but it makes an interesting place to visit and remains largely un-developed. Both Mahon and Cuitadella have retained their marine sport traditions and during April both ports will be host to sailing competitions.

On 12th April the Balearic Sailing Federation is holding a competition for smaller boats from the marina at Es Castell, in the Mahon estuary. At the other end of the island the Club Nautico de Cuitadella will hold competitions on three consecutive Sundays in April.

For those who prefer to keep their feet (or wheels) on solid ground, the sixth edition of the Lighthouse Tour of Menorca may be of more interest. This event uses more than 200km of tracks and trails on the island and provides a great way to explore the different parts of the island.

Flythomascook.com operate a full summer schedule of flights to Menorca, starting in April and providing options of flying there from various UK airports.
